In this third semester, I got teaching experience in SMAN ** Jakarta. This school is well-known as prestige school because it has A for the accreditation. The majority of students come from middle up to high class economy background. This condition, in fact, really influences the complexity of school facility, especially to support teaching and learning. In this reflection, I just would like to stress my observation result about the technology which this school uses in the field of English subject only.
Based on my observation and the data I got from this school, the technology tools which support English lesson are LCD and sound system that both of them are provided in each class, laptop, radio type and language laboratory whose a monitor in each two tables. Those tools are in good condition and can be well operated.
In my observation, my master teacher mostly uses LCD as the media of the presentation in class. Of course, before he enters to the class, he has to have a good preparation that is designing material on the power point slide. The presentation was applied when he should review the 12 types of text. As the result, giving presentation using power point is really more attractive. Students were more attracted with the visualization, for instance, colors, images, and the brief description. Then, learning process in the class happened more efficiently because the teacher had firstly made preparation so that he just explained and added some new information in the class. My master teacher also used a mouse pointer that he could easily change the slide so that he could move around monitoring the students while explaining the review. In addition, my master teacher uses LCD not only for presentation but also for listening practice. Some teachers, however, didn’t utilize those technology tools yet to support the students learning in the class. When I compared the situation of class which was taught by them, between teachers who used LCD or not, the result was different. Teacher who used LCD for presentation could more control and monitor the class situation whereas they who are not faced a crowded class which means students felt bored and made noisy.
Anyway, according to me, some teachers actually used the available technology properly and effectively for learning. However, the use still needs improvement. For examples, LCD is mostly used by the teachers only. I think it would be better when students could use the LCD, for instance, for a group presentation rather than they just stood up in front of class using small paper. Then, if I had to teach that class, I would add more various forms of task by utilizing the technology tools provided, for instance, using video learning, making quizzes etc.
In addition, the availability of new technology tools should be balanced with the skill of all teachers who are going to use them. As my suggestion, the school should hold the special training to train the teachers how to operate and integrate those tools in learning so that they can be properly used for the effective learning. 🙂
